New Delhi, May 17: When faxes don’t work, blitz the home minister’s email from abroad.
P. Chidambaram’s email ID has been bombarded with messages from the West, calling for the release of an activist and an alleged Maoist sympathiser, provoking curiosity about the foreign appeal for something so “local”.
Over 150 such emails are being analysed by the ministry, sources told The Telegraph.
Some of the messages said: “Stop state repression”, “release” Jiten Marandi and Lingaram Kodapi, “stop human rights violations”. While Jiten is said to be a cultural activist, Lingaram is accused of being a Maoist sympathiser.
Minister of state for home Jitendra Singh told Parliament yesterday many of these messages were identical but had been sent from over a dozen locations and by different people.
For example, 20 individuals from as far apart as Brussels and London sent an identical message asking for the release of Lingaram or Jiten.
Jiten, who activists say was a secretary of the Committee for the Release of Political Prisoners, was arrested in 2008 for allegedly murdering 20 persons, including the son of Babulal Marandi, a former chief minister of Jharkhand.
Kodapi, a young man from Chhattisgarh, was arrested last year on the suspicion of being a Maoist sympathiser.
Most of these “spam” mails have come from the UK, Sweden, Belgium, the Netherlands and the US, the sources said. “They are from individuals seemingly in Europe and the US and only a few are from India. But we suspect these statements have been written in India and then sent either from here under fake names or sent to foreign activists to be redirected to the home minister,” said an official. “Earlier, we used to get fax messages, now we get emails.”
One foreigner under the scanner is Swede Jan Myrdal, son of Nobel laureate couple Alva Myrdal and Gunnar Myrdal.
“Jan Myrdal, a pro-Maoist Swedish author, visited India in January this year and attended pro-CPI (Maoist) conventions in Calcutta, Hyderabad, Ludhiana and Delhi. He supported the CPI (Maoist) ideology of armed struggle against the state and spoke at length in a seminar at Delhi,” Jitendra Singh told the Rajya Sabha yesterday.
Singh said the CPI (Maoist) had a number of front organisations across India. “When CPI (Maoist) activists are arrested in different parts of India, a concerted campaign is launched by sending hundreds of identical emails, many of them originating from foreign countries.”
Singh added that it could not be ruled out that some of these organisations receive foreign funds. The home ministry is looking into accounts of several NGOs suspected to have violated the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act.

Make some tea, grab your laptop and go back to bed. Working from home? You’ve already started!2 Efficiency is the by-wordDo not waste a single moment doing things you normally do only because you know you’re going to come into contact with other humans. This might include shaving, applying makeup, brushing your hair, finding matching socks or checking to see if your jumper is on the right way round.3 MultitaskOnce you are ready to begin your working day, power up your computer and open the following windows: email, official; email, personal; BBC iPlayer; eBay, Things I’m Watching; your novel so far; YouTube; spreadsheet application; Facebook; web pages related to your weird hobby. I can only suggest that you confine yourself to purchasing biscuits you don’t really like. You’ll still eat them, but over the course of seven weeks it will make a big difference to your overall intake.8 Ignore the landlineUnder no circumstances should you answer it during the day. Calls placed to home numbers during office hours are invariably from one of the following: robots offering to consolidate your debt; robots reminding you that you haven’t paid your telephone bill; robots blathering on about payment protection insurance refunds and trying to trick you into pressing 5; wrong numbers; defeated-sounding men pushing dodgy investments; or someone from your bank bearing bad news. Take my word for it: I just answered my landline six times in a row in order to compile this list. After a few weeks you may ask yourself: why do I need a landline at all? The answer is simple: it’s there to receive and harmlessly discharge all those pointless calls. If they couldn’t ring your landline, they’d find another way.9 Go outsideBy virtue of having to commute and conduct personal business at lunchtime, most office workers tend to spend at least a little bit of their day outdoors. The home-worker, by contrast, can go for weeks without putting on shoes. Make a point of going out to stand in the sun once or twice a day, even if it’s just for a few minutes. There are plenty of unpleasant side effects to home-working – deteriorating hygiene, loss of affect, audible self-narration. You really don’t want to add rickets to the list.10 You’re a human resource – take care of yourselfIn an office, there are teams of people dedicated to making sure the working environment is safe, hospitable, hygienic and conducive to best practice.
